Rare George V sterling silver presentation cigarette case of interest to collectors of Gloucester City social history memorabilia. This concave cigarette case is engraved "GLOUCESTER UNION. PRESENTED TO T.E. HEYNES ON HIS RETIREMENT AFTER 29 YEARS OF SERVICE AS DISPENSER BY HIS FELLOW OFFICERS 1893 - 1922". The engraving refers to the Gloucester Union Workhouse where it appears Mr Heynes was employed in some medical capacity.

Gloucester Union Workhouse: In 1702, Gloucester was one of the earliest cities to establish a local act incorporation for the administration of poor relief and a workhouse was in operation from 1703. There was a workhouse in the city on a number of sites continuously until 1930 when the Unions were abolished and workhouses were taken over by county councils who ran them as Public Assistance Institutions until the NHS was created in 1948.
