Lovely pair of SOLID SILVER "Apostle" style sugar tongs.
Measuring 4" (100mm) in length and weighing 24g these tongs carry crisp marks on the outer faces of the bowls.
They clearly show the maker's mark for "H.A."..Atkin Bros. who were a famous Sheffield silversmith from the turn of the 19th century.
The year letter "Q" suggests 1883 making the tongs Victorian. They carry the profile stamp of the female monarch which supports this dating.
The lion passant is clear but the Assay Office stamp is rubbed...but 99% certain it would indicate Sheffield.
The opposite bowl carries a motif which appears to be a flourish of letters in a diamond formation?
The action is nice and springy and the piece is bright and clean with no sign of repairs.
The 'Apostle' seems to be a bearded male figure who appears on either side of the tongs, either side of the top curve.
