History -
In the early eighteenth century The East India Company commissioned teapots resembling elegant Georgian houses from Chinese craftsmen, and imported them to Britain. This inspired Staffordshire potters to produce their own Georgian house teapots. In the next century pastille burners, spill holders, tea and coffee pots were made as Gothic buildings as well as country cottages. However, it wasn’t until the 1920s that the full rural idyll was represented in teapots, cruet sets, biscuit barrels, preserve dishes, cheese dishes and butter dishes. Cottageware represented a nostalgic view of rural life and reflected a love of novelty tableware. All kinds of rural abodes were represented including water and windmills, lighthouses, castles, inns and gypsy caravans as well as rural edifices such as water towers and wishing wells. Occasionally figures were added to the decoration as in Kensington’s ‘Huntsman’s Inn’ tea ware which has the huntsman and his hounds. Over the next four decades cottageware was produced by many different potteries in Staffordshire and the rest of the country. You may think that a country cottage is quintessentially English, but that didn’t stop Japanese and Continental potteries from producing cottageware too and exporting to Britain, whilst paradoxically, Shorter & Sons made cottages with Oriental pagoda-like roofs. Much cottageware is unmarked or merely marked Foreign.
