Antique RARE The Old Nursery Rhymes Illustrated by Lawson Wood - 1930s
Great Condition- commensurate with age
Lawson Wood was a British painter and illustrator known for his comical depictions of animals, policeman, cavemen, and dinosaurs. His most famous character was Gran’pop, a ginger-haired ape. In addition to his artistic career, Wood was an animal rights activist, and many of his illustrations of animals were made into a popular series of wooden toys in Britain. Born on August 23, 1878 in London, England as the son of the landscape painter Pinhorn Wood, he went on to study at the Slade School of Fine Art, Heatherley’s School of Fine Art, and Frank Calderon’s School of Animal Painting. Wood began work as a freelance illustrator at the age of 24, producing images for a number of publications including The Graphic, The Strand Magazine, Punch, The Illustrated London News, and Boys Own Paper>. His bibliography includes children’s books such as The Bow-Wow Book, Rummy Tales, and The Old Nursery Rhymes, among others. Wood died on October 26, 1957 in Devon, England.
